Afternoon Tea is a still life of one of my favorite indoor subjects: tea. I drink enough of the stuff that sooner or later it was bound to end up on a canvas.
With this painting, I wanted to play with intense color and the simplified perspective you often see in the work of Matisse. The teapot, cup and little plant are all crammed into the scene on top of a heavily patterned cloth, with the table tilting up toward you rather than behaving itself like a proper table should.
The painting is full of warm reds, oranges and ochres, broken up with deep blue, black and teal. I kept the shapes bold and the brushwork direct instead of fussing over perfect perspective. That was the whole point.
I really enjoyed painting this one. It has a lot of energy for a still life, and I hope whoever owns it has it hanging somewhere useful — ideally a kitchen wall, near a kettle, where it belongs.
