Among the Sunflowers is a 16×20″ oil on canvas painted in February 2022—one of several figurative works I created during the heavy quiet of a Midwestern winter. With limited light and no plein air scenes to chase, I often shift toward figures and interior moments in the studio.
This particular piece shows a young woman walking through a field of sunflowers, her figure partially obscured by tall stems and golden blooms. It’s not based on a model or reference photo, but rather built from memory and instinct—shaped by color, form, and feeling more than precision.
While I don’t usually paint with world events in mind, this one was lightly influenced by the rising tension in Ukraine at the time. Sunflowers, the national flower of Ukraine, held quiet symbolic weight as I painted—though this is more personal than political. A gesture toward hope, resilience, and the enduring image of growth.
The brushwork is loose and expressive, with warm yellows and rich greens dominating the canvas. It’s framed simply and ready to hang.
