In rural Vernon County there are Amish greenhouses tucked all over the place. An Amish Flower Garden was my first attempt at painting one of those scenes — rows of flowers, farm buildings and all that color sitting out in the middle of the rolling Wisconsin countryside.
I wanted to capture the boldness of the place more than every individual plant. The flower beds are built from quick marks of red, yellow, orange and dark blue, with the red farm buildings and pale silos sitting behind them. A tall windmill cuts straight up through the middle of the painting and gives the whole thing a slightly odd, almost storybook structure.
The sky is big, blue and heavily worked, with chunky pale clouds rolling across it. Nothing is especially delicate. The paint is thick, the colors are pushed, and the garden is more about the overall punch of the scene than counting petunias.
These little greenhouse farms are one of those things you see all over rural Vernon County once you know to look for them. This was my first go at putting one on canvas.
