I painted Brunch at The Carlyle, Miami Beach from photos I took around Miami Beach.
This scene is outside The Carlyle Hotel, near Ocean Drive and 13th Street. It had everything I like about that area: the curved Art Deco building, palms, bright awnings, flowers out front, people wandering through, and sunlight bouncing off everything like it had somewhere important to be.
Miami Beach is not shy. That is part of the appeal.
I’ve always liked the bold colors and designs in the Art Deco district, and this one felt like a good excuse to lean into that without turning it into a postcard. It’s still a painting. It still has brush marks, odd little shapes, and bits that behave themselves just enough.
This is an 11x14 oil painting on panel.
