This painting shows the construction of the new Gundersen St. Joseph's Hospital and Clinics in Hillsboro, Wisconsin. It wasn't just another building site to me. I worked at the hospital, and I was heavily involved in raising money to help make the new facility happen, so watching it go up meant a bit more than passing a crane on the way home.
I painted the scene while the hospital was still very much under construction. The finished building is only beginning to emerge in the distance, with the crane cutting into the sky and piles of earth, temporary roads and construction equipment spread across the site.
Color does most of the work. The foreground is full of heavy reds, oranges, ochres, purples and dark blues, while the unfinished hospital sits beneath a broad sky built from loose blue, turquoise and pale gray strokes. It's a construction site, but I wasn't interested in painting fifty shades of mud.
Looking back, I like that the painting caught the place halfway through becoming something. I had spent a lot of time helping raise the money for the new hospital. This was the point where all that planning and fundraising had finally turned into steel, dirt and an actual building.
