This one was inspired by Van Gogh’s Cafe Terrace at Night, but I wasn’t interested in copying that painting or dressing up Viroqua like southern France.
I wanted to take that same idea — a café glowing against a deep blue night — and run it through my own world. So this became the Driftless Cafe at night, painted from memory and photo reference, with the storefront lit up, the boardwalk stretching out, and the whole street carrying that familiar small-town quiet after dark.
That’s what I liked about the scene. It felt calm, but not dead. Warm, but not cosy in a fake way. Just the kind of place that looks different once the sun goes down and the lights start doing the work.
