Painted August 2020

I first saw this scene while scouting places during the 2020 Paint the Point plein air event in Mineral Point. It was one of those little scenes that could easily be missed if you were in a hurry, which is probably why I liked it.

The alley was split almost in two by the light. One side sat in deep blue shadow while the other caught the full warmth of the sun. Along the raw brick wall were four umbrellas, all lined up like they had been put there specifically to make the composition work. Very considerate of them.

What really pulled me in were the shadows. The umbrellas, trees and building all throw shapes across the alley, and the strong contrast gave me plenty to work with. I pushed the warm oranges and yellows in the brick against those deep blues in the pavement and shade, keeping the brushwork loose and direct.

It’s a small corner of Mineral Point, but that mix of brick, sunlight, shadow and those four umbrellas made it worth stopping for.
