This is a scene I’ve seen plenty of times on my way to and from work, driving through Amish communities in rural Wisconsin. Winter doesn’t exactly make life easy out there, but the horses and buggies keep moving anyway. I’ve always been struck by how hardy people are in that kind of weather.

The painting shows a horse-drawn buggy heading along a snow-covered road, with a farmhouse, bare trees and low winter hills behind it. I kept the palette cool — lots of blue, gray and white — then used the warmer browns and reds of the horse, road and exposed ground to stop the whole thing disappearing into the snow.

It’s a small painting, but I like that about it. There isn’t much room for messing around on an 8 x 10. Horse, buggy, snow, cold. That’s the scene.
