Painted August 2022
I painted High Street, Mineral Point, Wisconsin during the 2022 Paint the Point plein air competition. By then it was my third year taking part, and I was finally starting to feel a lot more comfortable setting up an easel in the middle of town and getting on with it.
I’m drawn to architecture and ordinary daily life, and Mineral Point gives you plenty of both. This view looks along the main street toward one of the town’s big historic buildings, with old storefronts, parked cars, trees and all the little bits of a working downtown packed into the scene.
The painting is built around the street pulling you into the distance, with the solid shapes of the buildings on either side. I kept the colors lively — warm brick and stone against cooler blues, greens and shadows — without trying to turn the place into something tidier than it is. Mineral Point has plenty of character already. It doesn’t need much help from me.
