Original 8 x 10 Oil on Canvas
Private Collection
Painted November 2022
This painting came from one of the last ordinary days I had with my mum. I had gone back to Goole in May 2022 after my nan died, and while I was there my mum passed away suddenly. Months later, I painted this from the memory of a walk we took together in West Park.
It was me, my mum, my wife and our two kids. The sun was out, the flowers were in bloom, the birds were making plenty of noise and we were doing nothing particularly important. We walked, talked, let the kids spend time with their Nanna, and eventually stopped by the bandstand.
I remembered that bandstand from when I was a kid. My own kids had never really seen anything quite like it in the US beyond the occasional gazebo, and this felt different — a proper old park bandstand surrounded by benches. We sat down for a while and talked about nothing and everything at once.
In the painting, the bandstand sits right in the middle of the scene, surrounded by bright greens, flowers and strong summer light. The paths lead toward it from both sides, and the loose brushwork keeps the whole thing feeling like a memory rather than an architectural drawing. A few days after that walk, my mum was gone.
This one stays with me. It is part of my private collection and is not for sale.
