I painted this for Let's Shine Coffee when the shop was new in Hillsboro, Wisconsin. Their whole idea was coffee, community and creativity, which is pretty much exactly the sort of place I’m drawn to anyway.
I love coffee shops. Tea shops too, for the record. But coffee shops have somehow become a bit of a bucket-list item for me and my wife whenever we go out for the day. We’ll happily go out of our way to find somewhere local, non-chain and a little bit different. Somewhere cozy. Somewhere with a vibe. Somewhere they make the shit outta your coffee.
You know the kind of place. Beans grinding. Steam hissing. Cups clanging around behind the counter. Half a dozen things happening at once. Then somebody hands you a drink that clearly involved considerably more engineering than anything I make at home, and you get to sit down on a couch so big and comfortable it tries to eat you.
That busy feeling is what I wanted in this painting. The coffee shop is packed with detail — warm brick, hanging lights, people at the counter, pastry cases, shelves, artwork and bits of color everywhere. The reds, oranges and browns keep the interior warm, while cooler blue and teal notes stop the whole thing turning into a bowl of tomato soup.
Yeah. I like these kinds of places.
