In Chaseburg there’s a sweet little nature trail, so naturally I decided to paint it. Sometimes that really is the whole story. You see something close to home that catches your eye and you get the paints out.
The scene opens across water and marshy ground toward a red barn tucked behind a line of trees. I liked the way the reds and oranges in the grasses and buildings pushed against all those cooler blues and grays in the water and sky. There’s a lot going on for an 8 x 8 painting, so I kept the brushwork chunky and direct rather than trying to tidy everything up.
It’s one of those small local views that probably doesn’t make anybody’s tourism brochure, but that’s usually the stuff I enjoy painting most. A trail, a bit of water, a barn in the distance. Plenty to work with.
