Pete’s Hamburger Stand has been sitting in downtown Prairie du Chien for more than 100 years, and every summer the lines can stretch almost around the block. I came across this scene on one of those busy summer days and knew I had to paint it.
There’s something wonderfully odd about Pete’s. It’s a tiny little burger stand right in the middle of downtown, surrounded by streets, cars, buildings and people waiting for burgers. Nothing fancy. Nothing polished. It just does its thing, and apparently people have been perfectly happy with that arrangement for a century.
In the painting, the green-and-white awning cuts across the middle of the scene, with the crowd packed underneath it. An American flag and streetlamp pull your eye up into a huge blue summer sky, while cars and people fill the foreground. I kept the brushwork loose because that suited the scene better than trying to make every person in line behave themselves for a portrait.
That combination of a little neighborhood burger stand, a busy summer crowd and a downtown that has grown around it is exactly what made me want to paint it.
