Roesler's Bossie Mootel is a cow barn and farm between La Crosse and Coon Valley. I’ve driven past it more times than I can count, and the structure still catches my eye. Part of it is the age of the place, but mostly it’s the way the barn sits at an angle to the highway and how the farmland in front of it pulls your eye straight toward it.
This painting shows the farm in winter, surrounded by snow. On paper that sounds cold, but the scene never felt cold to me. There was still a surprising amount of warmth in it, especially where the orange and red notes in the buildings, silo and ground push against the blues, grays and whites of the snow and sky.
I kept the brushwork loose and chunky, especially across the field and the hills behind the barn. The big curved front of the Bossie Mootel gives the painting its anchor, while the smaller buildings and fence line keep the eye moving through the scene. It’s one of those places that looks ordinary until you’ve driven past it enough times to realize it really isn’t.
