I see this view as I come up over the ridge on the highway on my way home. It’s one of those scenes I’ve driven past plenty of times, but in winter it can suddenly look completely different depending on the light.

Early evening is when it really gets me. The snow catches those last bits of sun and starts picking up oranges, pinks and purples instead of just looking white. In this painting, the farm sits down in the landscape with the barn and silo breaking up all that snow, while the sky does most of the showing off.

I kept the color loose and pushed the purples and blues through the clouds and shadows, then brought warmer orange and peach notes across the horizon and snow. The barn and silo sit right in the middle of it all, surrounded by bare trees, fence lines and winter fields.

It’s a view I know from the drive home, which is probably why I like it. Nothing exotic. Just Webster Township in February when the light decides to make an ordinary snowy field look considerably less ordinary.
