Summer Barn was inspired by a beautiful farm just off the highway east of La Farge, Wisconsin. It was one of those places I passed and immediately thought would make a painting.
The funny part is that I’ve never been much of a fan of green. Green and I have had our disagreements. But on this one, it worked. The hills and trees are built from layers of teal, olive, blue-green and brighter greens, and somehow they all played nicely together for once.
The painting leans heavily into Fauvism. The barn is pushed into warm oranges, yellows, blues and purples rather than anything particularly sensible, while the sky is made from dozens of short strokes of blue, turquoise, cream and pale gray. Nothing is trying too hard to behave like a photograph.
It’s a pretty ordinary Wisconsin farm scene, just pushed through the way I was seeing color at the time. Lots of paint, lots of movement, and — against my better judgment — quite a lot of green.
