This came from a farm I used to pass on my way home from work.
One evening the sun hit the cattle in a way that made the whole scene jump out at me. That was it. The buildings, the field, the animals, the sky — everything suddenly had more charge to it. I painted this one from memory, trying to keep hold of that moment when a completely ordinary farm scene stopped being ordinary for a second.
That’s really what this painting is about. Not farming in general. Not some big grand rural statement. Just one stretch of land, one group of cattle, and one evening when the light got there before I did.
