The Barn II was really just a colorful barn sketch inspired by the local scenes I was seeing around me at the time. No big story behind it. I saw barns constantly, I painted barns constantly, and this one ended up on canvas.

The painting is built around a weathered gray-blue barn and silo, pushed over to the right side of the composition beneath a huge bright blue sky. The trees and fields are handled loosely, with turquoise, ochre, rust and deep blue doing most of the work instead of anything remotely resembling natural color.

I kept it quick and direct. The fence posts, trees and farm equipment are mostly just marks and shapes, which suits the painting better than polishing everything to death.

Sometimes a sketch is just a sketch. This one happened to have enough life in it to earn a frame.
