The Ride Home

This is an early painting of mine, and you can probably tell. Not in a bad way. More in the way early work sometimes still has a bit of nerve in it.

It’s a view of Dilly Church in Vernon County, painted from memory. This stretch of the county has a lot of Amish farms, and for a while it was part of my drive to work. That’s really what this painting is — not just a church in the distance, but the whole feeling of that road, those fields, the buggy, the long shadows, and the shape of the land when you know it well enough to carry it around in your head.

I didn’t paint this from a perfect reference. I painted it from what stuck.
