The Victory Lap is the second of two paintings I made for the 2021 Villa Louis Carriage Classic in Prairie du Chien. I liked the event enough to make two paintings from it, which is usually a decent sign that something has got under my skin.
The Carriage Classic brings together competitive horse-drawn carriage driving with the historic atmosphere around Villa Louis. Arena classes, carriages, horses and all the old-fashioned presentation give the whole thing a character that’s a long way from a modern sporting event. This scene shows a white horse and carriage making its way around the grounds with the crowd gathered behind the rail. Tall trees cut through the painting, a warm red building sits behind the horse, and the white tents break up all those darker reds, browns and greens.
I really liked how naturally the subject fitted my style at the time. There’s a bit of early-1900s atmosphere in the scene, and my own approach was already borrowing heavily from the Fauves and Post-Impressionists. So I pushed the turquoise, rust, red and blue and let the shapes stay chunky. No point dressing up like 1905 and then painting it like a photograph.
