The Windmill started as a quick warm-up painting based on a sketch I made of an Amish farm. Nothing complicated. Just a chance to get some paint moving before getting on with the rest of the day.
The windmill was the obvious center of the whole thing. It stands high above the farm buildings, right in the middle of the painting, with the barns, sheds and trees spread out underneath it. I pushed the sky with broad blue and white strokes, then kept warmer yellows, ochres and reds moving through the ground and buildings below.
I’ve always liked the way windmills sit over Amish farms. If I were Amish, I imagine seeing that windmill in the distance would feel a bit like seeing your own street sign on the drive home. There it is. Nearly home. It also makes a pretty effective landmark for spotting where neighboring farms are.
This was never meant to be a grand statement. It was a small, quick painting from a sketch, and that’s exactly why I like it.
