Viroqua Farmers Market II features one of the Amish vendors at the Viroqua Farmers Market. I loved the way this stall was set up. There was stuff everywhere — flowers and plants, towels and blankets, woodwork, jams and preserves — but somehow it all worked together and looked ridiculously inviting.
The Viroqua Farmers Market brings together local farmers, Amish artisans and other makers from around the Driftless region, so there is always plenty of material for a painter who likes color and clutter.
In the painting, the stall stretches almost right across the composition under a dark canopy. Bright flowers and produce sit against hanging towels and textiles, with shelves, boxes and bits of woodwork stacked around the edges. The vendor stands to the right while a couple of shoppers move through the scene.
I kept the brushwork loose because the appeal was the overall jumble of shapes and color, not cataloguing every jar of jam. The bright blue sky above it all gives the busy stall a bit of breathing room.
