I drive through the Amish countryside around here a lot, and every so often you catch a little glimpse of everyday life. A conversation at the end of a dirt road. Kids packed into the back of a buggy. Someone working in a garden. This was one of those scenes.
I spotted an older Amish gentleman working the field with a young kid beside him. They were dressed almost exactly alike, and the kid was doing his best to help by dragging a little cart along for whatever produce was being harvested.
The painting is pretty direct. The two figures sit right in the middle of the field, surrounded by loose blocks of blue-green crops and warm orange earth, with barns and farm buildings sitting up behind them. I simplified everything and pushed the color because the relationship between the two figures was the bit I cared about, not making an agricultural diagram.
It’s just a small moment from a working day, but that’s exactly why I wanted to paint it. Nothing staged. Nothing dramatic. Just a kid trying to keep up and help.
